Business Plan Sections

| Print |

A farm business plan should be packaged in such a way as to immediately convey a professional image. This means, among other things, using good quality cotton rag paper, a nice binding, and a professional looking layout and organization.

The business plan is broken into several sections, including:

Title Page

Clean and crisp. This is the place to show off your logo, as well as the title of the document, date and author of the business plan.

Table of Contents

Just what it says. A comprehensive business plan may be many pages long. Anyone looking at it should be able to go straight to the information they want.

Mission Statement

"If you don’t know where you are going, you might just end up anywhere." The mission statement should be organized around action words. It is about what you intend to do. A good mission statement is a guiding light that helps a business to stay on course.

Business History

Is this a totally new business, or the expansion of an existing business? Describe briefly the history of the business to this point.

Executive Summary

This section will be written last. It is intended to give an overview of the entire business plan document, much as the back cover of a book summarized the contents.

Business organization

What is the structure of this business? It is worth taking some time to develop an understanding of the terms like sole proprietor, partnership, and Limited Liability Corporation (LLC). How one organizes their business will have an impact on everything from taxes to bookkeeping to insurance to general liability.

Management Structure and Names of Principal Players

A small farming operation may only contain the names of the owners. Larger operations may need to describe an organizational structure including a farm manager and/or other employees.

"His dress was simple, consisting of a pair of trowsers, and a shirt of the cotton cloth of the country, of a dark blue colour; a poncho of alpaca wool covered his shoulders, while a sash was fastened round his waist, and his feet were protected by sandals, fastened on by leather thongs. He threw himself on the ground before my father, who went to meet him, and taking his hand, he looked up imploringly in his face...."
